DoorDash or Uber Eats—which pays more? Your own records can answer a more useful question: which platform performs better during the hours you can actually work? Compare final earnings, total work time, active time, and distance across similar shifts. Then apply the same cost method to both.
A bigger payout can come from a longer shift or more driving. A strong active hourly rate can also sit alongside a long wait between deliveries. Looking at these measures together helps you decide which work is worth repeating.
Start with comparable records
Choose shifts with similar weekdays, time windows, locations, and vehicle types. Comparing a Friday dinner on one app with a Tuesday afternoon on the other mixes the platform question with a scheduling question. Keep unusual weather, promotions, restaurant delays, and long personal breaks in your notes.
For each shift, record the date, start time, platform, vehicle, shift label, time worked, active time if available, deliveries, distance, and final earnings. Use one currency and one distance unit throughout the comparison. Leave unavailable values blank rather than inventing them.
Reconcile earnings with the platform’s breakdown. DoorDash describes its pay as base pay, promotions, and tips. Uber explains that tips are added to fares and promotion earnings. If your recorded total already includes tips, do not add them again. Keep pending amounts provisional and assign later adjustments consistently to the work that earned them.
Compare two sample shifts
These are invented shifts on separate dates, not platform averages or earnings forecasts. Both use USD, miles, and an illustrative combined operating and maintenance estimate of $0.30 per mile. Choose estimates appropriate to your own vehicle.
| Measure | DoorDash | Uber Eats |
|---|---|---|
| Final gross earnings | $72.00 | $78.00 |
| Total work time | 3h | 4h |
| Active time | 2h | 2h 30m |
| Distance | 24 miles | 38 miles |
| Estimated distance costs | $7.20 | $11.40 |
| Earnings after those costs | $64.80 | $66.60 |
| Gross per total work hour | $24.00 | $19.50 |
| After costs per total work hour | $21.60 | $16.65 |
Uber Eats produces $6 more gross and $1.80 more after the chosen costs, but takes an additional hour. DoorDash has the stronger hourly result in this example. The active-hour results also differ: $36.00 gross for DoorDash and $31.20 for Uber Eats. None of these figures establishes a universal winner.
The useful decision depends on your goal. Someone with a fixed three-hour window may prioritize earnings per total hour. Someone trying to finish a cash target may also care about the dollars available from an additional hour. Distance and vehicle limits can change the choice again.
Use the same definition of an hour
Total work time measures the session you committed to working, including waiting for offers. Active time measures the delivery work within it. Use each platform’s reported definitions and your actual work boundaries consistently; the labels alone do not make two totals equivalent.
Calculate gross earnings per total work hour by dividing final earnings by total work hours. Calculate gross earnings per active hour using active hours instead. These answer different questions. See active time versus total time for the full definitions and formulas.
Keep cost definitions consistent
In Drovm Analysis, net earnings subtract your distance-based operating and maintenance estimates. Separately logged expenses and tax reserves are excluded from those Analysis rates. An Analysis net figure therefore does not represent final after-tax take-home pay. Read delivery earnings after operating costs when comparing it with Overview results.
Use the same cost categories on both sides. Do not subtract a fuel estimate twice by including it in a per-mile allowance and then deducting it again from the same comparison. If the platforms were worked with different vehicles, use each vehicle’s appropriate costs and keep that difference visible.
Look for a repeatable pattern
Compare several similar shifts and inspect the individual results as well as the combined rate. For a period’s hourly result, divide its total earnings by its total relevant hours. A simple average of shift-level hourly rates gives short and long shifts equal weight and can mislead.
Also check how you used the apps. If DoorDash received your first choice of orders and Uber Eats ran mainly as a backup, the records describe that strategy. They do not show what either app would have earned with your full attention. When both apps were online together, keep platform-specific hours for comparison and count overlapping time once in your overall work total.
Compare your own shifts in Drovm
Enter or import your shifts, review the extracted values, and compare the platforms in Analysis. Use consistent shift labels and notes so a promising result can be checked against similar work later.
